  Secondary GTP Course Outline

The secondary GTP training is divided into two taught components, over and above teaching experience:

  • Professional Studies
  • Subject Knowledge for Teaching and Assessment
  • Mentoring
  • [Teaching experience]

Taught course to address wider aspects of teaching beyond the individual school
(2 hours a week)
Taught course to ensure subject application and assessment in the nominated subject area.
All GTP trainees will follow the Professional Studies course and some will follow the PGCE Subject Knowledge for Teaching courses where appropriate.

(2 hours a week)
Trainees have access to a trained mentor for a one hour per week dedicated mentor session - in each of the Base and Complementary schools
Trainees will spend every day of the academic year in schools.
Trainees will not usually have a teaching timetable at the start of the course.

Where a trainee has a previous relationship with a school it may be that they will have a small teaching timetable in September.

GTP trainees will normally spend most of their training in one school – although it is now a requirement that they spend some time (usually six weeks) in a second school. The details of their second placement are normally determined during their first term taking into account the training needs of individual trainees and the needs of their placement schools.
