P.G.C.E. Trainees

PGCE students on a SCITT course are required to pay variable tuition fees. For 2010/11 these can be up to £3,290 depending on the SCITT access agreement.

We have decided – in consultation with our validating university - The University of Bedfordshire  – that our tuition fees will remain at £2,500 for 2010/11 (there will be an increase in 2011/12).

All PGCE trainees qualify for an annual bursary of between £4,000 & £9,000 to help meet living costs (please see our Presentation from the Information Evening for the 2010/11 amounts per subject).  This is paid directly to the trainee in 9 equal instalments from October 2010 to June 2011 (inclusive).

As well as applying for a tuition fee loan to cover our tuition fees of £2,500, additional funding is available to PGCE trainees including maintenance grant, maintenance loan, help towards childcare costs and disability allowance (some of these may be means tested).
Please check www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance for full details of finance available and how to apply.

You may also be eligible for exemption from Council Tax (contact your Local Authority).

Applications for student finance should be made through Student Finance England www.direct.gov.uk/postgraduate-funding (Initial Teacher Training).

On qualification a PGCE trainee may also receive a 'Golden Hello'.  Eligible subjects offered by North Bedfordshire Training Partnership are Maths and Science, PGCE trainees in these subjects receive a Golden Hello of £5,000 on application at the end of their first year of teaching.

OVERSEAS STUDENTS

PGCE funding depends on your status as a home student, European Union (EU) or overseas student.

Students not eligible for funding will have to pay course fees of up to £8,500.

G.T.P. Trainees

GTP trainees are employed by their training school where they receive a salary not a bursary. This is usually on the unqualified teacher scale and can start from around £15,816 (the government pays the school a significant proportion of this). The good news is that since GTP trainees are not pursuing a university course they will not have to pay £2500 tuition fees.

However, please note that GTP trainees are not entitled to student discounts (including council tax) and are not eligible for a ‘Golden Hello’. Also, remember – you will have to pay tax on your income.

Please visit the DfCSF website and TDA website for further information on trainee grants and financial incentives.
